The Western Region Brain Tumour Support Group was founded in November 2006. In 2016 the support service has become part of Cancer Care West’s cancer support services, continuing to provide support for all those diagnosed with a brain tumour, and those affected by the diagnosis in the west of Ireland.
Their group meetings are informal and provide patients, family and friends with an opportunity to share experiences, joys and fears of various treatments and symptoms along with experiences day to day living with a brain tumour.
The meeting also enables family to talk with others about changes in family roles or discuss financial concerns. Connecting with others in similar circumstances whether a patient or family member can reduce feelings of isolation and fears of the unknown, enhancing coping skills, which in turn reduces anxiety.
From time to time we also invite guest speakers to talk to the group on issues of interest and relevant to us.
Ongoing support and outreach is also provided by Cancer Care West through phone contact and home visits, when required, throughout all counties in the Western Region for those unable to attend meetings due to periods of hospitalisation, debilitating illness or long travel distances from Galway city.
